Approximately 70% of all new power generation capacity installed worldwide in 2024 was photovoltaic systems. With its new HelioProtection HP20P fuse series, Mersen is helping PV module manufacturers further increase the efficiency of their systems. The PV fuses for photovoltaic systems with 2,000VDC output power are a major innovation toward higher system efficiency and safer high-voltage architectures. The first of its kind on the market in this power class, they are also among the smallest fuses for PV systems with 2,000VDC, measuring just 22mm x 85mm.
This breakthrough enables designers to optimise space inside combiner boxes, inverters, and other equipment while maintaining robust protection for next-generation PV installations. These fuses have been developed for solar fields with many PV modules connected in series. Available from 20A to 60A within the same housing size, the series provides engineers with significant flexibility in system design and integration. The series PV fuses feature a minimum breaking capacity of 1.35 times the rated current, facilitating safe circuit interruption under typical conditions with low fault current. This ensures improved operational safety across key applications, including generator connection boxes (combiner boxes), inverters, and battery charge controllers.
The company has obtained UL248-19 and UKCA certification for its HP20P series PV fuses. Approvals according to the European standard IEC 60269-6 and the Canadian standard CSA C22.2 are expected shortly. The fuses can be incorporated into the application using ferrules or crimp caps. Wire crimp connections provide a solder-free connection between the wire and the fuse, enabling encapsulation of the fuse and cabling.
With the HP20P, the company sets a new standard in high-voltage DC protection, combining innovation, system efficiency, and safety leadership for the rapidly advancing solar industry.
