ROHM Co., Ltd. has announced that its EcoGaN power stage IC has been adopted in the AC adapter for MSI's products, including gaming laptops.

The AC adapter, developed by Delta Electronics, a global leader in power management solutions, integrates ROHM's EcoGaN power stage IC BM3G005MUV-LB, which features high-speed switching operation and low ON resistance. Combined with Delta's superior power supply design expertise and leading energy-efficient power management technologies, this collaboration facilitates substantial size reduction and energy savings compared to conventional adapters.

Thanks to the integration of the EcoGaN power stage IC, the AC adapters Delta designed for MSI products can deliver high power output and maintain peak output for a specified period. This ensures stable power delivery even under high-load conditions typical of gaming environments that require high performance.

As gaming laptops continue to evolve with increasingly powerful GPUs and CPUs, their power consumption has also risen. This trend requires AC adapters that can deliver high power while meeting user expectations for portability through miniaturisation.

GaN devices, renowned for their low ON resistance and high-speed switching characteristics, are gaining attention for their ability to improve power supply efficiency and reduce the size of peripheral components, such as inductors. The company's power stage IC integrates a 650V GaN HEMT, gate driver, protection features, and peripheral components into a single package, enabling the maximisation of GaN HEMT performance by simply replacing conventional silicon MOSFETs.

Red Lin, general manager, Edge Computing Power Business Unit, Delta Electronics, said: "The combination of Delta's state-of-the-art power supply solutions and ROHM's EcoGaN power stage IC has enabled high power delivery, optimal energy efficiency, and miniaturisation in this AC adapter for gaming laptops. We are proud that this solution has been adopted in MSI's products, a globally recognised brand. We look forward to continuing our partnership with ROHM, a company with strong expertise in GaN technology, to ultimately provide customers with Delta's next generation of energy-efficient power solutions."

Satoru Nate, division manager, Power GaN Solution and Product Development Division, LSI Development Headquarters, ROHM Co., Ltd., said, "Delta Electronics and ROHM have long collaborated in the field of power systems. We are delighted that this adoption reflects the successful integration of Delta's power design expertise with ROHM's power device development, manufacturing, and analogue power supply technologies. Moving forward, we aim to contribute to the miniaturisation and efficiency of power supplies not only in gaming PCs, but also in servers, industrial equipment, and automotive applications."

The company's GaN HEMT Power Stage ICs offer an optimal solution for all electronic systems requiring high power density and efficiency. A GaN HEMT and a gate drive driver optimised to maximise the performance of the GaN HEMT are included in one package. With a wide input voltage range of 2.5V to 30V, it can be combined with any controller IC. This IC is designed to adapt major existing controllers, allowing it also to replace conventional discrete power switches, such as Super Junction MOSFETs.
